He completed residencies in both internal medicine and preventive medicine at Boston Medical Center, as well as a general medicine research fellowship and Masters of Public Health with a concentration in biostatistics and epidemiology from the Boston University School of Public Health. Dr. Perlman became Director of Integrative Medicine for the Saint Barnabas Health Care System and Medical Director for the Carol and Morton Siegler Center for Integrative Medicine, in Livingston, New Jersey in 1998. In that role, he had primary responsibility for developing and overseeing the Complementary & Alternative Medicine Program, including both the Integrative Medicine Center and the Center for Health and Wellness for the largest healthcare system in New Jersey. His clinical practice focuses primarily on general wellness, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and cancer, particularly breast cancer. He lectures widely and has been a featured media expert in these areas, as well as vitamins and nutrition. In 2002, Dr. Perlman became Executive Director for the Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (ICAM) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), where he is an assistant professor of medicine. In 2004, he was named the UMDNJ Endowed Professor in Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Dr. Perlman also maintains his medical directorship and clinical practice in Integrative Medicine at Saint Barnabas, where he was recognized by his peers with the "Excellence in Caring Award" in 2000. His scholarly activities include numerous grants and publications. He was guest editor of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine volume of Medical Clinics of North America, as well as associate editor for the Complementary and Alternative Medicine section of the Physician Information and Education Resource (PIER), developed by the American College of Physicians and American Society for Internal Medicine. In 2003, he also co-authored the chapter on osteoarthritis in Integrative Medicine, published by Elsevier Science USA, and the chapter on rheumatology in Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Rehabilitation, published by Churchill Livingstone. Dr. Perlman is currently the Principal Investigator on four funded research projects. These include a clinical trial to assess the efficacy of massage therapy for osteoarthritis of the knee and a clinical trial looking at the effect of multivitamin-mineral supplementation on performance in school in inner city youth. Dr. Perlman is the father of five children. He is a 5th degree black belt and an instructor in martial arts, which he began practicing in 1982 and credits with spurring his interest in complementary medicine.
